CoronaWarnApp or Immuni?

CoronaWarnApp is Germany’s equivalent of Immuni. https://www.coronawarn.app/ .

I installed it while disabling Immuni (you cannot use both), even though I live in the province of Milan and have no intention of traveling outside Italy. Warning: I am NOT advising you to do the same. I am experimenting.

  • It is a trustworthy source: it is authorized by Google & Apple as Germany’s official Exposure Notification app.
  • It is available on the Italian Play Store:
  • It is an International Gateway, explained directly in the app (Immuni does not mention anything like this, at least in the UI):

I know Immuni should also be (by declaration) an international gateway. But the volume reported below currently does not match.
  • Immuni checks my exposures against a DB of 4963 keys right now:
CoronaWarnApp checks my exposures against a DB of 268412 keys: which they declare also include the Italian ones.

So, a few hypotheses:

  • Case study: in Italy I come into contact with an Italian positive case. I should be notified exactly as if I were using Immuni, because CoronaWarnApp is an international gateway and also provides Italian TEKs to my OS.
  • Case study: a German (or an Irish) visitor comes to my area, then goes home, tests positive and uploads their TEKs in their country.
CoronaWarnApp should warn me; Immuni should NOT. It is clear: if Immuni were already a working international gateway, it too would contain over >200k TEKs.
  • Case study: I get notified of a possible exposure, but CoronaWarnApp has no specific instructions for Italian ASL offices:
I just re-enable Immuni, and I should receive the same notification. The TEK database of my contacts is in the device’s Exposure Framework, NOT in the apps that use it.
  • Case study: I test positive and must upload my TEKs:
I install Immuni and follow the procedure. My TEKs were in the OS; it does not matter if until the day before I was using CoronaWarnApp.

Where am I wrong? I am genuinely looking for a reason to go back to Immuni: right now I do not see one; on the contrary, I am better protected with CoronaWarnApp.
